What this tool does
The Background Remover cuts the main subject out of a picture and makes everything else transparent. You get a PNG file that you can drop onto a new background in a design tool, a presentation, a shop listing or a social post. It uses an open-source segmentation model that runs locally through WebAssembly in your browser, which is why nothing has to be sent to a server.
How to get a clean cut-out
- Start with a sharp, well-lit photo. The model finds the edge between subject and background. Blur and heavy shadows make that edge harder to find.
- Choose a background that differs from the subject. A dark jacket on a dark wall is harder than the same jacket on a light wall.
- Keep the subject complete. If a hand or a corner of a product is cut off by the frame, the model cannot invent it.
- Check hair, glass and fine edges. These are the hardest areas for every background remover. Zoom in on the result before you publish it.
Good uses
Online shop listings often need a clean, uniform background. Profile pictures, thumbnails, stickers, presentations and print mock-ups benefit too. If you plan to sell products, see our guide to product photo mistakes for lighting and framing tips that make cut-outs easier.
What to expect from the result
AI cut-outs are good, not perfect. Complex edges such as curly hair, fur, smoke or transparent glass may need manual touch-up in an editor. For most everyday photos the result is ready to use straight away. If the output file is large, run it through the Image Compressor with WebP output to keep transparency at a smaller size.
Privacy and limits
Your photo stays on your device. The only network request is the one-time download of the model files from a public CDN. Very large photos are reduced on phones to avoid running out of memory. Files up to 25 MB are accepted. Read our privacy policy for details about the third-party hosts involved.
